Three books to nourish your faith
John Piper is a Baptist pastor from Minneapolis, Minnesota, a prolific author and compelling speaker. I have many of his books on my shelf and they are all good. But I would particularly commend these three; his first and seminal work Desiring God, Let the Nations Be Glad, which is a stirring call to make Christ known to all peoples and Seeing and Savouring Jesus Christ, a more devotional reflection on our incomparable Lord and Saviour.
Piper’s whole approach to life can be summed up in the central assertion of Desiring God; that God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in him so he delights in trumpeting God’s sovereign greatness, and does so with stunning turn of phrase and resounding logic.
Whereas some offer easy answers Piper is not afraid to duck tough questions such as suffering in Let the Nations Be Glad, Jesus’ severity in Seeing and Savouring Jesus Christ and the love of money in Desiring God. In an age of evangeli-gimmicks these books stand out as works of stature which will endure. In a day of muddled thinking they help lift the eyes of faith off the weak foundations of mere human philosophies and fix them on the unshakable edifice of God’s wisdom.
Available to buy (or order) on the bookstall. Desiring God is also available to borrow from the library.
